Obstetrics and Gynecology is a diversified specialty concerned with the delivery of medical and surgical care to women. This field combines two specialties: obstetrics, which focuses on the care of women before, during, and after childbirth; and gynecology, which involves the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the female reproductive system, breasts, and associated disorders.
Throughout a pregnancy an obstetrician monitors a woman and ensures a healthy pregnancy is occurring. Once the baby has reached the point of delivery, the natal stage is monitored. If need be the obstetrician addresses any situation that may occur during labor. After a child is born, postnatal care is addressed for the mother and newborn. Medication may be prescribed and recovery is monitored after this stage.
